Our Story

How Charley’s became Australia’s most highly awarded chocolate.

Our Sustainability

Cocoa tree seedling

Charley’s was designed as an environmentally sustainable business from the start.

We are proudly Australian growers and producers of the finest Australian chocolate. We use premium local Australian ingredients. We recognise and respect the value our people bring to our business. Our  local growers, suppliers, and partners are key to our success. We recognize that we work and live in the Great Barrier Reef World Heritage Area and act to ensure this magnificent resource is passed on to future generations.

Sustainability Strategies

We have given careful thought to researching, refining and implementing sustainable strategies, namely:

  • Direct trade relationships with cocoa farmers, ensuring fair prices and better traceability.
  • Promote farming practices that eliminate harmful pesticides and protect soil health.
  • Energy efficient equipment.
  • Waste minimization by optimizing production processes and reusing by products like cocoa shells and husks
  • Supporting research and development into new technologies and farming practices that can further improve sustainability.
  • Collaboration with other stakeholders to develop and implement industry-wide sustainability standards.
  • Raise awareness about the importance of sustainable chocolate production and encourage consumers to choose chocolate made with sustainable practices.
  • Employee well-being and training
  • Sustainable packaging materials.

Growing cocoa in Far North Queensland

Our story is about taking some risks, doing things differently, having fun along the way and making a difference to regional Queensland and Australia where innovation, value adding, eco- tourism and our premium product offering can enchant our visitors.

We live and work in Mission Beach, a World Heritage area where the Rainforest meets the Reef. We cultivate cocoa and manufacture chocolate, all with a legacy of sustainability and conservation uppermost in our minds.

Ideal cocoa growing conditions are based on equatorial distance and climate. Cocoa grows well in warm and wet places such as Mission Beach which is at a latitude of 17.8691 and longitude of 146.1063 and averages 3.41 meters of annual rainfall.

As at 2024 our factory complex is complete with the ability to significantly increase our chocolate making and cater for an expanding workforce.  Our on-premise retail outlet is up and running and the initial vision of Charley’s Australian Chocolate Centre is being realised. Our chocolate range has expanded with additional sourced local ingredients such as Davidson Plum, lemon myrtle. We are always keen to hear from local producers. We have a substantial stable of Australian based loyal wholesalers.  We are about to ship our first international order.
